Carpets are some of the most precious possessions in any household giving life and flamboyance to the rooms and hallways. Unfortunately, carpets become dirty repeatedly especially when you have young children or pets around the home. They can also wear easily unless you take care of them properly. Taking care of a carpet is not common knowledge because the information available to most people is not accurate. You can make your carpet last for a long period by following some simple and inexpensive tips on carpet cleaning. Doing so will save you a lot of money and it will keep your carpet looking fresh and clean always. Here are the do’s and don’ts on carpet cleaning.

Clean spills as soon as possible
Carpets will always be victims of spills from soft drinks, beer, ice cream, and wine among others. The longer a spill stays on the carpet, the harder it becomes to remove it. Therefore, the only solution is to clean it as soon as you can before it becomes permanent. It can also lead to a bad odor if stays on the carpet for a long time. However, you should never rub a spill because doing so will drive it further into the fabric making it hard for you to remove it completely. Instead, you should blot it using a cleaning solution and a soft cloth. Blot it from the outside going in so that it does not spread outward. You can also use a paper towel or sponge to blot the stain if you cannot find a clean cloth.

Vacuum your carpet first before cleaning it
Carpets have an enormous amount of debris at any given time. The source of this debris is normally crumbs falling on the floor as people eat, pets shedding their fur, and broken pieces of various items falling on the floor. Dust and dirt are also sources of debris. The problem is that they accumulate making it hard for water, cleaning detergent or steam to move through the carpet smoothly. They may also dissolve into the water or detergent inhibiting their function by making them unable to absorb other substances like liquids from the fabric of the carpet. Therefore, the best way of ensuring a thorough job is by vacuuming first. Doing so will soak up all the surface debris from the carpet making it easier for you to clean it.

Pre-treating your carpet is a good idea
Sometimes, you may have failed to wash your carpet for a long time because you left your home unattended for months. Other times, you may lack the time to clean it because you are too busy dealing with work or something else. In such cases, your carpet may be heavily stained or dirty. It can also be in this way if you just bought it from someone who did not take care of it. The best thing you can do is to pre-treat it with an applicator wand and a cleaning solution. You can buy a carpet cleaner that comes with this pre-treatment kit or you can buy it separately. The idea is to soften the fabric loosening the stubborn stains before you clean it properly.

Check a small area of your carpet first for any potential problems
Carpets may contain various fibers including nylon, acrylic, wool, cotton, polypropylene, and polyester. Sometimes, a carpet can have just one fiber while in most cases it has a combination of two or more fibers. It is important to note that these materials react differently to the chemicals contained in cleaning solutions. The most obvious reaction is staining, hardening or softening depending on the chemical and the fiber. You can prevent such reactions by simply testing a small area of your carpet with the cleaning solution before you use it on the entire carpet. If you see a negative reaction, then do not proceed with it. However, you can use it if it seems to have no adverse effect on the fabric of your carpet.

Take care of your carpet in-between cleaning
Most people do not pay attention to their carpets until they have to clean them. Do not make the same mistake. Carpets appear fresh and beautiful if you take care of them regularly. They are also easy to clean if you do because you would not have to deal with numerous stains that are stubborn. The best thing you can do is to vacuum your carpet frequently with a good vacuum cleaner. It should pick up most of the debris on the surface of the fabric, and in places that are hard to reach. You should also wash your carpet regularly based on the manufacturer’s advice. Failing to clean it for a long time increases the likelihood of dirt, germs, and stains building up on its fabric.

Remove carpet stains with a bit of ingenuity
Spills on carpets are common and households cannot escape them. People have different ways of dealing with them. Some use water as a way of removing them. Others ignore the stains altogether while a few people using a bit of ingenuity. You should become part of these few people. For example, you can remove beer and wine stains with a solution of club soda, vinegar and water. You just let this solution sit on the stain for about 15 minutes and then you blot it out with a sponge or paper towel. You can also remove traces of blood with hydrogen peroxide. You should loosen the blood with a mild detergent mixed in water. Then scrape off as much as you can without harming the carpet. Finally, apply hydrogen peroxide to whatever remains and then blot it out with a paper towel or a clean cloth.
